I have been given a summer project to complete before i start year two of my degree. One of the modules for year one was to design a costume based on a given character from the realms of folklore. I was given The Green Man. The design below is the image chosen by my tutor for me to create. I only need to do the top half as there is going to be a lot of fabric art and embroidery.
Checkout my Pinterest board on The Green man to see the inspirational pins that i have found.
I will update this page when i have completed certain areas.

Monday 2nd July
Starting to get all the fabric and supplies together ready to start very soon. I have begun the padding out process to shape the under structure. Firstly i put a t-shirt on the mannequin and then built up layers of wadding. When i reached the shape i wanted i then put another t-shirt on top.
The next step is to create fabric in the bark effect by sewing together strips of fabric.Once there is enough bark fabric i can use my chosen pattern. I am using an Elizabeth Friendship pattern for an early medieval shirt.

Tuesday 3rd July
Last night i played about with cutting on the stand. I pinned the fabrics that i have to the mannequin and arranged them. The first photograph was the first fabric arrangement and the second picture is the most recent. I added an extra strip of the light colour as i did not want a line down the centre front. The left side is wear the actual bark effect will be. On the right i will be adding lichen and moss effects.

- Re-configured the front of the costume so that it is all one colour.
- Quilted a bark effect on to the front,
- Machine sewn one part of the back panel.
- Attached the inner fabric and wadding to the sewn back panel.
- Started the quilting on the prepared back panel.
Monday 27th August
Finally attached the back pieces to the front part. Costume is now looking like a wearable garment. Only quilted one back piece as i am going to be doing something else to the other. Got my 3D bug out of the draw so that i can finish it and get it ready to attach the costume once it is finished. Looking for more ideas on what other bugs to create. Might do a lady bug and maybe a snail.

Yesterday and today I started and finished the bagging out of the back pieces and hemmed the bottom. I also have made a start on the embroidery decoration. One bug and three bits of lichen are ready to be cut out and applied. My cat Hermoine decided that she wanted to help as well. She does look awfully pleased with her interruption.

I did not realise that I had not posted for so long. There has been a lot going on in land Phoenix. Not only have i been busy with my costume but one of my best friends has had a baby Girl. Oh and my daughter has gone back to school so its is back to early mornings.
On the costume front I have been busy as there isn't much time left.
Today i will be finishing off the binding and then i can concentrate on carrying on with the decoration.
